OIL RIGS

The very words 'Bono' or 'Bob Geldof' are hair-triggers for allowing my latent misanthropy to run amok and unfettered. Let the picture do all the talking - Oprah, I love you, going barefoot there was a fucking masterstroke.

Bono, Geldof, Oprah et. al. conspicuously ignore the disastrous effects of constant monotheistic clashes within Africa (see especially Bono's consultations with the Pope) while attempting to be knights on white horses for a continent- and for that reason alone, I have to suggest that *Fela Kuti* has done more for Africa than any of these well-wishing glitterati. Not only did he suffer more genuine risks to life and limb, but I'll take "Zombie" over U2's latest any damn day.

I'll certainly echo all that! These attempts and dabblings are almost exclusively ego-driven, which is why they're so consistently patronising, if not condescending, and they lack even the odd positive side-effects. We could sacrifice much time writing volumes on this subject, which is why I merely chose this bitchy little post.

William, if you DO write a book on this you could always submit it to "Oprah's Book Club." ;) In the meantime, though, it would just be nice to whack these people over the head with copies of the Philip Gourevitch book on Rwanda, Karl Maier's Nigerian journalism etc., so they can understand that merely funneling their fortunes into their respective causes is not going to solve much of anything.

May I offer, to the appeasement of your misanthropic feelings on these matters, my Jan. 7 entry - a fictionalized review of Live-8, as we would have liked to have seen it happen.
